Mathematics

"Math gives us hope that every problem has a solution."
Shapes

Shape vocabulary sets are available on many SGDs. In WordPower 60 it is available under 'groups' and then 'shapes' and colours.

In LAMP WFL, it is available under 'make' and then 'shapes.'

In WordPower 60, there is a page all about shapes. You are able to edit each page and add buttons. When working with my students on the goal "I can identify a number of edges and vertices in a 2D shape," I added the words "edges" and "vertices."

Patterns

Patterns can be supported by any speech device. Some examples of patterns are AB, AAB, AABB, AABB, and ABC. Some visuals you could use when teaching patterns are:

  • colours

  • shapes

  • letters

  • food

  • people

In this video, the student used switches/BIGmack™ buttons to extend an AB pattern:

Operations â€‹

Basic math operations include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. To access these symbols in WordPower60, click the cell "ABC123":

Descriptive Language & Measurement â€‹

Language and mathematics are closely correlated. In Math, we use words to describe what we are seeing, the operations we want to do, and to answer word problems. Some descriptive words you can use with an individual using AAC are:

  • more

  • less

  • bigger

  • smaller

  • same

  • tall

  • short

  • heavy

  • light

  • long

  • equal

  • greater

Time

Learning time can be difficult but can be supported through the use of AAC. Avaz has a video which shows how you could model teaching time such as AM and PM.

You can practice teaching days of the week, months of the year, dates, and years during a daily calendar time.

Math Communication Board â€‹

Communication boards are a great option to increase communication and math in the classroom. There are options available online which are linked below. Many communication boards include numbers, shapes, and math descriptive words/vocabulary.
